Watch: CNN’s Fareed Zakaria Uses Proposed Safe Injection Facility to Teach “NY Values” to Ted Cruz

On Sunday’s Fareed Zakaria GPS, host Zakaria mocked Ted Cruz for his comments disparaging New York values, and took the opportunity to shine light on a New York town doing something so progressive around drug policy, that it actually might be said to embody European values. The town is Ithaca, where Svante L. Myrick, the 29-year-old mayor, wants to open a supervised injection site—the first in the US.

There are currently 90 supervised injection facilities worldwide, the first of which opened in 1986 in Switzerland, where it cut opioid-related deaths (most of which were from heroin) by two-thirds from 1995-2013. If we had reduced opioid-related deaths by that much in the United States, notes Zakaria in the video below, over 5,000 lives would have been saved in 2013 alone.

Since Ted Cruz is against sex toys, and only feels at ease when surrounded by 100 cans of soup, it seems safe to say that Ithaca’s “New York values” would blow his mind.
