Moments after discretely injecting heroin in his bus seat, 25-year-old Michael Meeney collapsed from an overdose in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. A security camera captures the exact moment Meeney falls out of his seat. Fortunately, Upper Darby police officer Matt Rugh arrives on the scene and sprays naloxone, which reverses opioid overdose, into Meeney’s nose.
Minutes later, Meaney regains consciousness and is able to walk to an ambulance. He was subsequently taken into custody on possession charges.
Public awareness of the life-saving properties of naloxone has increased drastically in recent years. The overdose-reversing medication has become increasingly available to law enforcement and is a major issue in the 2016 presidential campaign.
