Watch: Maria Sharapova Announces That She Failed a Drug Test

Maria Sharapova has taken full responsibility after failing a drug test at the Australian open. The 28-year-old Russian tennis star, a five-time grand slam champion, held a press conference where she announced her intentions to keep playing after testing positive for Mildronate—a heart medication which she has been taking for 10 years, and which was only added to the list of prohibited substances this year.

“I don’t want to end my career this way and I really hope I will be given another chance to play this game,” Sharapova said. “If I was ever going to announce my retirement, it would probably not be in this downtown Los Angeles hotel with this fairly ugly carpet.” It’s a case that further highlights the fine lines between kosher and verboten when it comes to drugs in professional sports.
